At Töölö Square, a group of neighbours gather to discuss a problem: unauthorised persons have started to move around in the stairwell. People have also moved around in the basement, in the storage rooms and in the laundry room. In addition, someone has not picked up after their dog.

Suggestions are pouring in: a new code lock, more cameras, better lighting, maybe even facial recognition at the gate? At the same time, the old neighbour conflicts are bubbling up – who always leaves rubbish behind and lets unauthorized people into the stairwell? You certainly don’t pay several hundred thousand to have to feel insecure in your own staircase.

As fears grow, distrust and anxiety come to the surface. What is real, what is imagined and how are we affected by each other when we are driven by anxiety, loneliness and a longing for security?

With warm humour, horror master John Ajvide Lindqvist depicts how easily the sense of security can be shaken and how quickly a ”we” can become a ”them”.
